PERSISTENCE OF POPULATIONS IN ENVIRONMENTS WITH AN INTERFACE

Abstract

Human activity and climate change are putting increasing pressure on ecosystems and endangering an ever-increasing number of species. Careful management of natural resources is necessary to protect biodiversity for both moral and economic reasons. Ideas from ecology and mathematics can inform policy decisions in order to more effectively manage natural resources. In particular, marine protected areas (MPAs, here defined as no-take zones) are tools used in fisheries management designed to maintain marine resources and preserve biodiversity (Claudet et al. 2010, Langebrake et al. 2011). The designation of a MPA creates an interface at the boundary between the MPA and the surrounding area, which we will call the fishing ground (FG). Here, we identify necessary and sufficient conditions for the persistence of populations in an environment with two regions (MPA and FG) separated by an interface.
